Challenge Information

Want to create the next Shaun the Sheep, Harvey Krumpet or Robot Chicken? We challenge you to create a Stop Motion movie! It can be as long or short as you want, and can be about absolutely anything. The characters or moving elements in your movie can be done with clay, toys, people or anything else you can think of. Have a look at our movie below showing a few examples of stop motion movement.

To create a stop motion movie, you just need to take a photo of your character… move the character a little… take another photo… move the character… take another photo… and repeat! To make the movements look smooth, only move the character a tiny bit between photos. Make sure you keep your camera still so that it looks like the character is moving smoothly (use a camera/phone tripod if you have one).

If you’d like to learn more about stop motion, you can access an in-depth 2-hour tutorial with your library card on Lynda.com.

You can use any apps/software to put all these photos together into a movie. Some examples include Stop Motion Studio (Android/iPhone/iPad), iMovie (iPhone/iPad), GIFMob (Android), and most video editing software on computers.
