Five Years On – By the Bremer : Memories of Ipswich

By the Bremer : Memories of Ipswich” was officially launched in May 2010 as part of Ipswich’s 150th anniversary celebrations.  This blog was created by staff at Ipswich Libraries to showcase the rich and varied history of the city and last year it was listed in Inside History magazine as one of the “50 blogs you need to read”.  “By the Bremer: Memories of Ipswich” was awarded recognition in the ‘leading history institution’s’ category and was the only Queensland public library recognised. The criteria for these awards included originality, quality of content, historical accuracy, use of photographs and sheer passion.

In the last five years, staff have created 184 posts for the blog on topics ranging from “Hyacinth on the Bremer River”  to Ipswich : Our Military Heritage“.   One of the most rewarding aspects of having a blog is when community members comment on our posts, sharing their memories of Ipswich’s past.  Some of our most popular posts have included : “Our Own Castle“, “The Baths of Ipswich”, “Cribb & Foote – Celebrations“,”The Old Flour Mill Ghost” and “Historic Fossil Sites in and around Ipswich”.

If you’re one of the many people who visit “By the Bremer : Memories of Ipswich” regularly, why not comment below and let us know about your favourite blog post or contribute your own special memories of Ipswich.
