George Brockwell Gill – Architect

George Brockwell Gill lived and worked in Ipswich for 55 years. He retired in 1943 and went to live in Coolangatta in a house he built and designed. But Mr Brockwell Gill left a lasting impression on the cityscape of Ipswich.

A lot of the beautiful buildings in Ipswich were designed by George Brockwell Gill, including:

  • Flour Mill
  • Ipswich Girls’ Grammar
  • Brynhyfryd
  • Congregational Sunday School
  • Cribb & Foote’s stores Bell street extension
  • City View Hotel
  • Ipswich Technical College
  • RSL Memorial Hall
  • Part of the Ipswich Hospital buildings
  • Walter Burley Griffin Reverbatory Incinerator

In the Viva Cribb History room, we hold copies of a number of his architectural plans for buildings he designed for Ipswich.
