Identifying our history through Picture Ipswich

Picture Ipswich is an online database of images operated by the Ipswich Library and Information Service which captures the lifestyle and history of Ipswich. Many of the images in Picture Ipswich have been kindly provided by the community.

This is a photograph of the jailhouse at West Ipswich.  Although we know it was opened in 1887 and closed in 1961 this is the only image we have. We don’t know when the photograph was taken. Do you have any images of this jailhouse that was on Keogh Street, or homes from around the area that was originally known as Little Ipswich?

If you have other photographs depicting the past way of life and history of the Ipswich community, please contact the Digital Archivist on 3810 7272 or email

All photographs are scanned and returned to the donor.
