Ipswich City Vice-Regal Band

The Viva Cribb Local History Room has recently acquired the newly published Viva Cribb Bursary winner book by Maurine Lyon entitled “The Regals: History of the Ipswich City Vice-Regal Band”. The book focuses on the history of the band from its origins in Ipswich in 1890 by founders Hancock Brothers, through to name changes and contest and concert details from in Australia and around the world.

The book is well presented with a large number of photographs dating from 1891 to 1963, bringing back fond memories of a time long past. There are also a number of interesting stories and accounts, one of which includes the detainment of the Band at a Sydney Contest in 1919 after a flu epidemic closed the borders from New South Wales to Queensland. The Band was camped at Tenterfield for three weeks, during which time the City of Ipswich helped to raise funds to pay for the men’s living costs and lost wages during the time spent in the camp.

If you are interested in reading this book or any other information on the Ipswich City Vice-Regal Band, you are welcome to come and visit us in the Viva Cribb Local History Resource Room from Monday to Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm.
