The Regional Arts Development Fund Ipswich Showcase will be an exciting exhibition of new work by our local artists. Held in the Ipswich Art Gallery on the 21st July – 15th August.
One of our most famous local artists was d’Arcy Doyle.
d’Arcy Doyle Place was named in honour of Australia’s most popular artist, Ipswich born d’Arcy Doyle. d’Arcy was born in 1932, the youngest of nine children. He went to school at St Mary’s and St Edmund’s College, leaving at the age of thirteen to begin an apprenticeship in signwriting. He ended his apprenticeship to join the Royal Australian Navy and after serving for six years he left to become a professional artist in Sydney.
d’Arcy Doyle’s paintings and prints reflected the more relaxed way of life in Australia between and immediately after World War 2. His paintings remind people of their childhood in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s, back when life was simple and children played in their front yards or on the street.
d’Arcy Doyle passed away on August 28, 2001 after a long battle with cancer.
